New York Power Authority powers a cleaner future through public infrastructure

On World EV Day™, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) joined the global community in celebrating the advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology and their pivotal role in creating a more sustainable future for New York.

As New York State's largest electricity provider, NYPA is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation, driving initiatives that make EVs more accessible and convenient for all.

Here are a few highlights of their recent efforts:

  • Expanding EV charging infrastructure: Through its EVolve NY program NYPA is building a robust network of EV fast charging stations, across the state, making it easier than ever for New Yorkers to charge their vehicles. The program is designed to “fill in the gaps” and make locations available every 50 miles along state-designated corridors.
  • Electrifying public transportation: Governor Hochul unveiled 60 new electric buses for Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. The MTA and NYPA are expanding infrastructure to support these buses, including 17 fast chargers that dispense energy through roof-mounted arms that automatically connect with the buses. This initiative aligns with New York's goal of an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and the MTA's aim for a fully zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.
  • Supporting EV adoption: To encourage EV adoption, NYPA offers on their website a trip planner tool to show how easy it is to plan a road trip driving an EV. – The tool allows you to locate chargers, provides vehicle specifications, charging times, ‘electric fuel’ cost, rebates, and much more. Plus, they are represented at a number of community public outreach events and involved in student education through NYPA’s ’Environmental Justice Department

The transition to electric vehicles is essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. By supporting the widespread adoption of EVs, NYPA is helping to build a cleaner, greener future for all New Yorkers.
